Should wind generators be built on mudflats,in parks and industrial estates to make Southend carbon neutral?
Essex is one of the best places in Europe for Wind Generation.No generation is sited in Southend at the present time.If you visit Rotterdam which was similar to Southend geographically you will hundreds of these machines.
If you stand on leigh cliffs you can see smoke belching out of the oil refinery.We could replace this with an elegant row of wind turbines.Some could have viewing platforms at the top to serve as a tourist attraction.They take up little room on the ground and can be placed in parks,golf courses,farmers fields, industrial estates and on the mudflats. The civic centre would be and ideal place.
Also the town would gain financially from the construction of them.
A town the size of southend will require about 400MWatts to run it. (Not including transport)
A wind turbine will generate about 800kW when the wind blows at full tilt, more likely an average of 200kW. Thats a requirement of 2000 wind turbines.
If you can find someone willing to stump up the 4 billion quid required, and cope with the NIMBIS then off you go and do it.
Wind turbines are a useful addition but not the full answer, which is infact a portfolio of measures including biofuels carbon storage or recycling (chemical reaction using sunlight to convert CO2 back into fuel) most carbon balancing technologies including nuclear have severe drawbacks we need to face these realistically and stop protesting and winging.
You could not replace the energy produced by oil refinaries by "a row of wind turbines" and there are plenty of Nimbis who think them not to be elegant
The anti nuclear lobby (seeing as it chipped in) needs to count up the deaths and political trouble caused by fossil fuel extraction and pollution AND find funding for alternative power, ie put-up ot shut-up.
