The most momentous news to come out of Kenya these past few days was not the celebratory roar by supporters of the winners of respective ODMs presidential nominations.

It was the deafening silence that attended the release of a report linking allies of former President Daniel Moi to massive looting that allegedly saw billions of dollars taken out for safekeeping and investment out of the country.

One searched in vain for clamour for action by politicians and citizens in general to, at the very least, establish the veracity of the Kroll Report. Instead, the Government Spokesman was on the frontline shooting the report down as hearsay and rumour. Former officials who were adversely mentioned were given opportunity to rebut the findings.

For all intents and purposes, the matter is going to end there, which is entirely expected given the country's history, class and political configurations.

About two years back, it looked as if the country favoured political and economic class aka elite was about to unmask itself. For a few days mud flew from all directions as representatives of factions that collectively constitute about one per cent of the population — but collectively own or control virtually everything in the country — accused one another of looting public resources.

Masses cooperate in silence

After Constitution Affairs minister Ms Martha Karua issued not so subtle threats to the occupants of glass-houses not to throw stones, the hullaballoo ended. It was a truce that political economy predicts is inevitable in a social formation such as Kenya. The potential costs of going at each other far outweighed certain benefits of cooperation hence the cease-fire among Kenya's elite.

Slightly more difficult to explain is why the fleeced masses cooperate in silence.

But it can be explained. Every head robber in the country stands atop a patronage and ethnic mountain that forms a strategic redoubt from which he can lob salvoes at detractors and throw smokescreens to confuse the general public and to excite supporters.

Even assuming the authenticity of reports about the fleecing of Kenya is in doubt, at the very least they should generate debate even about hypotheticals such as what the sums in question could do for the country. For starters, the money could retire a substantial part of the foreign debt if that is your priority. Two billion dollars could revamp and upgrade much of the country's tired and tattered infrastructure. The amount could do wonders in education and agriculture, among other sectors.

We are not only dealing with what if here. The hard truth is those and other amounts we have no clue about that were siphoned out, and in all probability are still being siphoned out, explain why the country's economy remains hopelessly small in the light of the citizens demands.

How could it be otherwise? The very capital that would have been invested to generate further growth was drained. And that is not hypothetical. The country's toothless and irrationally expensive anti-corruption authority has told us as much. And that is as much as it has done and can do. More than that it cannot precisely because the system that sanctioned it never meant it to have any bite. And were it to ever develop a bite despite its express purpose, it will run full tilt into the usual cauldrons thrown by beneficiaries of the present set-up and their hangers on, to the very lowest levels.

Discussion about Africa's prospects frequently alludes to the continent's unique economic characteristic. Africa is the only continent in this God's own wide world whose elite consistently registers a vote of no confidence in their birthplace. Africa exports a far higher proportion of its capital than any other continent. The culprits are not who you think: foreign companies and the like. It is the African elite who by its investment decisions telegraph to all that they have no hope it the continent's future.

Edouard Manet, a great French painter, was born in Paris on January 23, 1832 to the mother, Eugénie-Desirée Fournier, and father, Auguste Manet. Eduard belonged to a well to do family and his father was a French judge. Auguste Manet aspired the field of law for Edouard Manet. Edouard's uncle, Charles Fournier however, always encouraged him for his creative work, painting. Later on, he went on to be one of the best modern artists of the nineteenth century, who was also a key contributor to the painting movement of the transition from Realism to Impressionism.

Though trained for a career in the navy, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture, an academic painter of large buildings. He pursued the training in art under Couture from 1850 to 1856. There he painted at the Academie Suisse. During 1853 to 1856, the painter traveled through Europe, including Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In 1856, Edouard started his own studio. In 1858-59, he painted "The Absinthe Drinker," which is a work of Realism, belonging to the genre of Gustave Courbet. Mostly Manet painted people in nearly all the aspects of lives such as the scenes at cafes, social functions, wars, and the life at Paris, to name some. His work consisted of loose brush strokes, light colors with an emphatic use of black and simple elaborations.

Edouard befriended the Impressionist artists, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, who married his brother in 1874, and Charles Baudelaire in the early 1860s. Early 1860s was also the time when Manet painted some of the key milestones of his painting career such as "Music in the Tuileries (1862)." In 1863, he sent his three paintings to Paris Salon, including his controversial work, "Luncheon on the Grass (1863)," for exhibition, where they were rejected. After Paris Salon rejected Manet's paintings, he exhibited his paintings at Salon des Refusés later in the same year. Later on, critics greatly acknowledged the paintings that created a cultural uproar. In 1865, two of Manet's paintings, "Olympia (1863)" and "Christ," showing naked women, created a stir in the Parisian community. Actually, he had copied the work from an engraving of the sixteenth century.

The masterpiece works of the other artists usually inspired the paintings of Edouard Manet. He would copy the essence and theme, limiting his modifications to the surroundings and clothing. The painter used to imitate the artworks of old masters. Manet was particularly impressed by those of Goya, Velazquez, and Courbet. Some great paintings of Eduard's are inspirational works such as "Luncheon on the Grass (1863)" is based on the engraving of the "Judgment of Paris (1515)" by Marcantonio Raimondi, and two Renaissance Paintings viz., "Pastoral Concert (1508)," and "The Tempest." Similarly, his very famous and controversial artwork "Olympia (1863)" is derived from "Venus of Urbino (1538)" by Titian and "The Nude Maja (1800)" by Francisco Goya. The painting received appreciation from the likes of Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, and Paul Gauguin. Manet always believed that the essence of a subject in a painting is not what it represents but how it has been painted.

Manet was romantically involved with Suzanne Leenhoff, whom he later married in 1863. She was a Dutch piano teacher. Earlier she used to teach piano to Manet and his brother. It is believed that she was his father's mistress. She gave birth to a baby boy, Leon Koella Leenhoff, in 1852. Leon also figured in Eduard Manet's paintings "Boy Carrying a Sword (1861)," which is put in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and "The Balcony (1868-69)." In 1867, Manet painted the "Execution of Maximilian," which immensely distressed the public in France.

Manet gave up his own style of painting and adopted the style of other Impressionists, which include broken brush working. "A Bar at the Folie-Bergere (1882)," is one of his most valuable and memorable paintings which he drew about two years before his death. The painting was exhibited at Salon that year. This painting displays his styles and interests in early years. It shows a marble bar with flowers, fruits, and the bottles of liquors. This picture is considered as one of the most complicated pictures in art's history. The crowd and the straight lines make this masterpiece Manet's most treasured accomplishment.

Edouard Manet acquired syphilis and rheumatism in his forties. He eventually died of these untreated conditions, on April 30, 1983, at an age of 51.

How do you decide whether to purchase graphite or steel golf club shafts?

Here are the pros and cons of steel shafts vs graphite shafts:

STEEL

Pros: (i) consistent manufacturing of steel is easier to attain and there is less variation from manufacturer to manufacturer; (ii) more accurate because of a lower more penetrating ball flight; (iii) less torque and twisting.

Cons: (i) heavy; (ii) produces lower club head speed, and therefore less distance on shots; (iii) favors swing speeds above 95 MPH, thus eliminates many higher handicappers from playing steel.

GRAPHITE

Pros: (i) light weight; (ii) produces higher clubheadd speeds and longer distance on shots; (iii) more easily customized for players of all skill levels; (iv) matches up better with today's larger drivers, hybrids and fairway woods

Cons: (i) less accurate; (ii) higher ball flight that can be difficult to predict and control; (iii) confusing array of choices for the average golfer; (iv) no standardization of specs such as flex, kick-point, twisting and torque from manufacturer to manufacturer; thus one company's "firm flex" may another's "stiff flex" and so on.

In sum, if you want more distance, play graphite; if you want more accuracy and control, play steel.

The Game of Golf has most definitely changed throughout the years. Well, not so much the game, but the Golf Clubs and Accessories available sure have.

I remember when I first started playing Golf, decades ago. The only thing metal about our Golf Clubs were the Golf Irons and of course your putter. A very good Golf Driver was made of persimmons wood. And Fairway Woods were exactly that, Woods. Hybrid Irons? What's that? Fairway Metal? Come on now.

Back then we considered a 250 yard drive huge. Now, heck, these guys are hitting them out to 400 yards or more. A 300 yard drive for a pro is not just a standard but it's almost expected. Hitting the long ball has taken on a whole new meaning.

My Dad and I play together as often as we can. We live in different parts of the country so it is not as often as we would like. But I can think of a number of occasions when we both hit great tee shots. My Dad would say "yours was youth, mine was technology." Youth? Dad I'm pushing fifty now. I could use some of that help too.
