Driving the golf ball a long way is more down to technique than power aE" if you look at the professional golfers, they all have the ability to crush three hundred drives, however they seem to swing effortlessly most of the time. This is because they use efficient weight transfer and have excellent timing to make sure that they hit the ball in the same way each and every time. There are actually five main principles to hitting the golf ball a long way, and in this article I'm going to discuss one of the key factors that you should be aware of in your quest to hit the ball three hundred yards and beyond. This principle alone can add anywhere from 10 to 30 yards to your drive and is probably one of the most important things that you should learn as a professional golfer. If you can practice this technique and integrate it into your natural swing then you'll be able to start hitting further drives without putting your back out trying to smack the heck out of the golf ball. Here's what you must do: The power in your swing always comes from the rotation in the shoulders and core of your body aE" you'll never be able to generate any decent power from just swinging your arms by themselves. Therefore to get more distance we want to try and maximise the rotational power that we can get from our body.

But simply extending our shoulder turn could lead to more eratic and less consistent drives. What you can do, however, is encourage your body to turn further by following a swing thought. That swing thought is to take the club back away from the ball with as much extension as possible. You should be trying to get a wide arc on take away. This servers two purposes aE" firstly, it encourages your left shoulder to turn early on in the backswing and tuck under your chin, secondly it makes sure that your swing plane is not too steep. All too often I'll see people picking the club up on the backswing and creating a really steep angle of attack to impact aE" this will sap the power from your swing and is not the correct way to use the driver. Here's a drill you can use to encourage a wide take away. Put a tee into the ground behind the ball on the correct swing path aE" make sure there is sufficient distance between the tee and the ball. As you bring the club back, try to hit the tee out of the ground. On the downswing, hit the ball as per usual. If you can do this with a bucket of balls down the range for a few days, the feeling will start to be ingrained in what's called your muscle memory. Experts say that you need to do a movement somewhere in the region of 100 times before it is committed to your muscle memory. After this point, the swing will become more and more natural for you and you'll create a wide arc without even thinking about it! See you 300 yards down the fairway!

It's not your strength that's holding you back form hitting 300 yard drives - it's simply down to technique! Discover secret golf driving tips with Eric Jones, World Long Drive champion of 2003.
