Steel alloys are popular in metal manufacturing industries. With a wide array of forms and shapes derived from this industrial product, these items became popular in the fabrication and feedstock industries. Machining, forging, casting, assembly and spinning processes are employed to produce outputs from these products.

The shapes and forms produced form this industrial product include rods, bars, tubes, plates, sheets, shims, spheres, foil, billets, wire, slabs and strips. Some other materials like powders, ingots and fillers may be produced. Round, hollow, hexagonal and coil stocks are also end products of steel alloys. Learning about the several alloy types gives better understanding of these industrial products.

Austenitic alloys

An austenite is produced from a combination of an iron solution and an alloy. When it cools it changes into other mixtures like ferrite and cementite. At some extents, pearlite may also be produced. This type of steel alloy is favored because of its capability to resist corrosion and its increased strength from the results of cold working.

Austenitic alloys have two types of series. First is the 200 series containing manganese, nickel and chromium. The second types is known as the 300 series that contains only nickel and chromium. The mechanical properties of austenite is changed with the use of quenching, annealing or tempering.

Ferritic alloys

These are stainless steel alloys belonging to the 400 series. Ferrite is more popular as iron and is the same substance that is capable of making cast iron and steel obtain their respective magnetic properties. They are not hardened even under heat treatments or solutions. With cold working though, they may be hardened moderately. The best characteristics of ferritic alloys extend to its resistance to corrosion as well as its ductile qualities and oxidation properties.

Martensitic alloys

A martensite is a hard form of steel structure and may sometimes be a result of displacive transformation of crystal structures. This type of steel alloy is formed through the rapid cooling or quenching process of the austenitic alloy. While it is magnetic and ductile, it is only capable of resisting corrosion in milder environments.

Other types of alloys of steel

Besides the three forms of steel alloys discussed above, there are two more types to take note of. First, is the precipitation hardened stainless steels defined as metals produced from the combination of chromium and nickel. The alloy component of this metal comes from either aluminum or nickel. They may undergo processes for hardening and strengthening. The other type is known as duplex stainless steels and is termed as such because of the presence of two other types of alloys of steel - austenitic and ferritic.
