Phil Mickelson is working and training hard to return to the PGA Tour as soon as possible. It has been a difficult summer for Mickelson; both his wife and his mother were diagnosed with breast cancer, though both cases were found early. Nevertheless, he is very pleased to be back on the golf course. Mickelson will play at the Bridgestone Invitational, where he was the runner-up last year; he will also return in time to participate in the Hazeltine, the final major championship of the year to compete for the PGA title of the year. After his wife, Amy, discovered she had cancer, Mickelson participated in only two events aE" the St.
Jude Championship and the US Open aE" both before his wife's July surgery. Frightened of what his wife would be facing, Mickelson decided to leave golf and the PGA tour aside while Amy underwent her treatment. Mickelson did not provide any information on either his wife's or his mother's progress. The player will talk about golf, his professional career, or even business, but his family's illness was personal, a matter that only involved close family.
When he finally decided to announce that Amy had cancer, it was because he was going to be absent from the course for several months. During the announcement, the golfer broke down into tears several times.
Today, however, his family members seem to be recovering. aEoeI feel we've been fortunate because of a couple reasons,aE he said. aEoeBoth my mom and Amy have caught it early, and we've been able to have some wonderful care. And not only have the doctors been incredible in their science, but they've also been very compassionate toward us. We've had a great medical experience.
We feel lucky to beaE"for a bad situationaE"in as good a situation as it can be.aE His last competitions this year was at the Bethpage Black where he closed with a 70, finishing two shots behind the winner Lucas Glover. This was the fifth time that Mickelson ended as a runner-up and the fifth time in eleven years that he has participated in this major tournament.
He was congratulated and admired by a number of players due to the issues that he was facing in his personal life. Mickelson started to practice again recently, perhaps when he knew that Amy was recovering. He said that he expected to play as he always does for the Hazeltine, deciding to make the scouting trip there in the last few days. He will face 80 men on the field, including Tiger Woods; the event will be a hard one for him, but definitely not impossible.
