Dozen Rock Bottom

Pond question -Plecostomus?

I have an approx 250 gal outdoor pond with a center fountain, UV dual filter. I have eight 4-5 inch goldfish and about a dozen babies 1" (hard to count there quick). my question is that I have about 1/2 -1" of green algae on the rocks and bottom, from the UV I suspect, the water is crystal clear and tests results are all within the proper range. would a couple of Plecostomus added into the pond help to clear this problem? if so what would be the proper kind and about how many would be needed? I live in south Louisiana so temps not a problem.

I would use common plecostomus, and try adding two at first and see how they do. You can buy adults, although they can be pretty pricey. If you start with juveniles and have a good supply of algae (which it sounds like you do) I have seen them reach full adult size in 6-7 months.

Other options to help out would include adding some partial shade to your pond, adding barley straw or barley straw extract or getting a UV sterilizer.

*Mumford Moose* Do not call me a liar. I have owned and cared for thousands of fish through the years, and yes I HAVE seen plecostomus grow that fast when they were supplied with a lot of algae and plenty of room to grow.
