Acushnet is in Bristol County and was originally an agricultural community. The residential Town of Acushnet has retained its rural atmosphere while providing a home for various industries. The name “Acushnet” is also the name of the river the town lies on, and comes from the Wampanoag “Cushnea,” which means “peaceful resting place near water. This meaning designated the fact that the tribe which sold the land to the Puritans inhabited the lands leading up to the river.
In the 1800s the town of Acushnet was the site of water powered factories and boat yards. In the 1990s the town became home to construction, manufacturing and agri-aquaculture industries.
The Acushnet Process Company was founded in 1910, now the Acushnet Company. The Acushnet Company is one of Southeastern MassachusettsÂ’s most enduring industries. They own the Titleist brand name, under which golf balls, golf clubs, and other golf paraphernalia are marketed.
Acushnet is a quiet and friendly community of fewer than 10,000 people with miles and miles of winding, country roads.
Acushnet, Massachusetts has two schools which are:
• The Acushnet Elementary School (grades from preschool to 4th grade)
• The Albert F. Ford Middle School (grades 5th to 8th)
The town does not have a high school. High school students may either go to New Bedford or Fairhaven High School per tuition agreements. They may also choose to attend Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School, Bristol County Agricultural High School or any other private high school.
The town of Acushnet is 51 miles south of Boston, 210 miles from New York City, and 35 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island.

Transportation and Access
Acushnet is served by the airport and port facilities of New Bedford. Interstate 195 and State Routes 24 and 140 provide access to the airports, ports, and facilities of Providence and Boston.
There is no passenger rail service in Acushnet, but connections to all points are available from Providence on Amtrak.
The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority provides fixed route service between New Bedford and Acushnet. The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority and the Council on Aging provides paratransit services for the elderly and disabled.
There are no hospitals, hospices or rest homes in Acushnet, Massachusetts. There is one Nursing Home.
