Lipo" refers to the fat content. "Dystrophy" is a change or unusual. In plain English, this means lipodystrophy describes the spectrum of changes in the fatty tissues of people in certain with HIV. Fat wasting or fat loss from the face is one of the characteristics of lipodystrophy which is a syndrome of body fat changes seen in people taking anti-HIV medications..

Wasting of fat in the face usually occurs with other changes in body shape particularly the development of a buffalo hump on the back of the neck. Nobody knows exactly why fat from the faces specifically goes away on people taking anti-HIV drugs, but a significant percentage of such patients will experience it depending on their particular retroviral medication regimens. It seems to occur particularly in men of low body weight who are over the age of forty.

Facial wasting can be treated by a variety of plastic surgery methods. The most popularized is the injectable approach using Sculptra or other long-lasting fillers such as Radiesse. While injectable fillers definitely provide a benefit, I don't find them to be the best value, given what they cost and the repeated treatment sessions necessary. In my experience, several surgical options are more effective with injectable fillers used to supplement them.

In order to qualify for Sculptra, a skin test is not needed. The effects are long-lasting, although some may require a series of three to five treatments four to six weeks. Improvement in contour occurs over the six months following the procedure and can last up to 2 years. A gradual change is preferred by some, as opposed to an overnight transformation. A Sculptra physician will be able to decide if additional injections are needed after seeing the effects of the first.

What could be the lipodystrophy?

The exact causes are still not fully understood. Some possibilities:

1 The protease inhibitors (PI). Some researchers believe could be the IP the activity of certain enzymes in the body, the excess fat and keep fat cells of the work to the accumulation of fat.

2 Nucleoside analogues (INTI). Nuclear weapons can cause damage to the mitochondria, the production of energy "of human cells. This could lead to lipodystrophy (particularly lipoatrophy, or fat loss). Although several nuclear weapons, have been associated with lipoatrophy, the risk seems to be the number of people who Zerit (Stavudine).

3 Other risk factors. People who are older (over 40), white, or the beginning of the HIV treatment with the lowest number of CD4 (under 100), may have an increased risk for development of lipodystrophy. And a person has been given IP addresses or Nuclear weapons, the greater the risk.

Even though this procedure is not considered major surgery, there are still risks involved. Always disclose any medications you are taking, existing health problems and allergies to make sure there are no adverse reactions to the filler or the local anesthetic. As with any cosmetic procedure, you should verify your doctor's credentials and make sure he is board certified to perform your procedure.
