Michigan is all about winter sports and festivities. The February snow does not slow them down and they keep busy. These events are great for families looking for weekend activities or stopovers on a family vacation. In Sault Ste. Marie, visitors will find the International 500 Snowmobile Race. This annual event is the oldest and fastest snowmobile race in North America. The race features time trials, Kids Mini Z Races, the I-500, Vintage Snowmobile Show and an awards banquet following the race. The race first race was held in February 1969 and was the first attempt to race a snowmobile 500 miles. The event drew over 10,000 spectators.

In Harrison you can find the Annual “Frost Bite Open” Winter Golf Tournament on Budd Lake. The event takes place on nine-hole courses and both novice and veteran golfers hit colored tennis balls over the snow. There are other fun games including the men’s and women’s longest drive, the two-person scramble, turkey bowling, the hole-in-one and the best sled competition. The Abrams Planetarium is located on the Michigan State University Campus in East Lansing. They offer public programs on the weekends in the evening and on Sunday afternoons. The shows feature a Digistar II projector and an outdoor observation is held if the sky conditions permit. There are also telescopes in from of the Abrams Planetarium that offer views of astronomical objects.

The Arcadia Brewing Company is located in Battle Creek and features tours of their microbrewery. They produce handcrafted ales that are brewed in the British tradition. They brew ten ales with five that are available year round and five that are seasonal. The products are distributed throughout Michigan, Indianapolis, Madison, Wisconsin, Columbus, Ohio and Peoria, Illinois. They also serve specialty pizzas and quesadillas that are prepared in a wood-burning oven as well as Southern style barbeque.

The Kimball House Museum is open every Friday afternoon for tours. The house was built in 1886 and has served as Battle Creek’s local history museum since 1966. The home is a Queen Ann style house is distinguished by a central square tower flanked by turrets. The home was established by Dr. Arthur Kimball when he set up his medical practice in the town. He became one of the most influential physicians. He worked with Dr. John Harvey Kellogg of the Sanitarium and they established “open air” schools. He also aided in the building of a tuberculosis hospital.
