Team away days should not be seen as opportunities to escape from work, but still get paid. Yes, they should be fun-filled, entertaining days, but they should also be informative, invigorating days that reinforce the basic team building message.

Team away days are a wonderful opportunity to recharge batteries. A team can become bored, exhausted, cynical and just plain world-weary if they have to plod on and on without any inspirational spark, other than the initial brief. Good team away days can provide that inspirational spark, if they're planned and managed in the right way.

A team may not always work in close proximity to each other. Increasingly, with Internet technology becoming more and more efficient at providing good remote working capabilities, some members of a company team may work from home, while others leave home to go to work in the usual way.

It's partly for this reason that team away days can be so valuable. They can allow individual members of a team to meet up and interact with each other and in this way learn the strengths and weaknesses of other team members.

A well planned team away day can also help to improve and enhance the intercommunication skills of members. Their listening abilities and attentiveness can improve, while they can gain renewed respect and appreciation for others within the team.

In some organizations team members can feel isolated. They may know that they are part of a greater team, but they may grow to feel unappreciated, and they may wonder if what they do is really worthwhile. Team away days should take this possibility into consideration and make sure that each team member is shown that they are valued, no matter how small a cog in the greater wheel they may actually be.

A good team away day will have team building and enhancing activities. These are usually fun and may seem frivolous at first glance, but underlying the fun and laughter is a very serious learning process.

Team members learn how to interact in situations that don't involve company profits. They become treasure hunters, administrators in a Wild West town, ghost hunters, murder investigators, hostage liberators, medieval knights on a quest, or they might act out any one of a whole host of other imaginative parts.

The activities that team members may undertake on team away days can be either predominantly physically active, or mentally active in nature. The difference is whether or not the team members actually act out their roles, or if they only find theoretical solutions to the problems posed.

Both kinds of activities are valuable. They each have their strengths and weaknesses, and for this reason it is usually best to have a balance of the two types, thereby covering all eventualities. It can usually be found that some team members will respond best to physical challenges while others will respond best to mental challenges.

Team away days are in a way a chance to escape from work and still get paid. However, if they are planned and organised well, and managed by someone who fully understands the desired outcomes, then they can also be an extremely valuable tool in the team building toolkit of any company.
