Nearly half of the hours each day take place between dusk and dawn, when it is almost pitch black outside. Nearly all outdoor activities typically stop when the sun goes down due to the fact that humans have poor natural ability to see in the dark unless we have the assistance of some sort of artificial light. The majority of people just accept and deal with this reality purely due to the fact that they are not aware that affordable night vision equipment is widely available.
Though most people don't realize it, night vision equipment is available for purchase to the general public. The majority of people are under the misapprehension that such equipment can only be obtained by military or law enforcement personnel. Now, it's a fact that items such as special application rifle scopes with night vision are only available to these groups, however there are many more devices on the market that anyone can buy. In fact the average person can buy and possess top military grade products such as night vision monoculars, night vision goggles, and night vision binoculars. The only restriction is that some of the higher end products can't leave the U.S.
Despite the fact that night vision technology has existed for nearly fifty years, the equipment remains underutilized. Generation 1, often called Gen 1, night vision technology was actually developed during the Vietnam War era yet it's still available today as a less expensive introduction into the world of night vision. While Generation 1 night vision devices afford significantly improved viewing in the dark over natural viewing, this increased capability is nowhere near what you can expect from US Generation 3 devices.
Gen 3 night vision items are thought to be expensive by some, however the advantages of using such equipment is often considered priceless to the person using it. It all comes down to the ability to see but not be seen. This advantage provides practically limitless potential. These advantages include, but are not limited to, enhanced capabilities in astronomy, hunting, blackout situations, wildlife observation, security, surveillance, camping, maritime navigation, and even search & rescue.
Among the most common questions about night vision equipment, are questions regarding the variances in the three generations of night vision. Naturally the cost increases from Generation 1 to Generation 2, and from Generation 2 to Generation 3, but so do the benefits. On a spectrum of 0-100%, zero comparing to unassisted human eyesight and one hundred being comparable to regular daylight viewing abilities, each generation offers its own range of enhanced night vision abilities. Visual abilities of Generation 1 range from 10-20%, Gen 2 from 50-60%, and Generation 3 from 75-85%. Similarly, operational endurance extends with each of these gens. Operational life of Generation 1 devices is typically 500-1,000 hours, while Generation 2 provides 2,000 hours, and this number jumps to 10,000 for Generation 3 devices.
Deciding which generation of night vision device to pick can be tough to figure out without the advice of experts. Items to consider in this decision boil down to available accessories, specific application, and personal preference. For example, many people opt to be thrifty by selecting a Gen 1 device, only to find that they are not impressed by its performance. But a user's experience is often notably improved with hands free and magnification accessories, among others.
Needless to say, there's a huge variety of night vision items and accessories available for purchase, which means there are virtually endless combination options. From weapon mounted night vision sights to infrared illuminators, the more one gets educated about night vision devices, the more equipped they will be to make an intelligent buying choice.
