Did you ever notice that the more people there are in the mall, the harder it is to navigate to the store you want and the harder it is to find people you are supposed to meet? It may take you a long time to find a parking spot and once inside, you may line up for the things you want to buy and the whole process will take much longer then if you had gone to the mall on a quieter day. The same thing is true of your computer. The more processes that are running whether upfront or in the background, the less resources your computer has to do other processes and the slower your computer and possibly your connection to the internet will be. Malware such as the so-called Internet Speed Monitor, install mini-programs on your computer that hog all your system resources and slow down your internet connection and computer speed.

Programs that run constantly in the background can be big resource drainers and you will compete with them for the resource to complete the process you want to do. One such program can be your anti-virus software. This is a legitimate program that needs to be running all the time but some anti-virus programs use an inordinate amount of system resources and will slow down both your computer and your internet speed. Research anti-virus software to find out how resource intensive it is. When I switched my anti-virus software a couple of years ago, the speed of my computer significantly improved.

A computer that is cluttered up with unnecessary files will run much less efficiently. Every time you download and install a program, many files are installed on your computer. Even when you uninstall the program, unnecessary files can be left scattered all over the place. Some malware such as Internet Speed Monitor, don't even let you completely uninstall them. The files regenerated themselves and the program continues to run and slow you down. Registry cleaners will clear out a lot of this junk from your computer and restore some space. Other basic measures you can take to free up space and resources is to delete temporary internet files and cookies from inside your internet browser. In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options. In addition, empty your Recycle bin regularly and clean out your hard discs. From Windows Explorer, right click on the disc drive you want to clean i.e. Local Disc C. Select Properties. The Properties dialogue box appears. Click on the button Disc Cleanup and choose the files you want to delete.

Lastly, many programs are configured into your Windows startup to start automatically and run in the background when you boot up your computer. Some of these programs are visible in your system tray on the bottom right of your monitor. Many of these programs do not need to be running all the time and you can save resources by removing them from Window's startup. To remove autostart programs type MSconfig into the Run command and press Enter. In the system configuration utility, click on the Startup Tab and uncheck the programs you do not need to start automatically. If you do not know what an entry does, Google the file name before un-checking it.
