What wedges should I get?
I need to get a new sand(54*) and lob(60*) wedge for summer golf. It is between the new Vokey Spin-Milled, CG12, or CG14. I will probably either get a CG12 60 and CG14 54 or a Vokey 60 and CG14 54, but I'm not sure. I play almost everyday all day long during the summer.
I'm a 5 handicap and have played vokeys for 2 years.
Either are fine clubs. Personally, I feel like the CG14 is better for the less accomplished player because the cavity back and insert make it more forgiving. The Vokeys are very nice but designed for a higher skill level. If you are over a ten handicap, go with the CG14. If you are under a ten, just get whichever feels better in your hands.
The Vokey wedge needs no introduction -- it's arguably the best wedge in golf. Let's look closer at the allure and popularity of this great wedge.
Bob Vokey is the Titleist craftsman and brains behind the great Vokey wedge. Mr. Vokey is a tinkerer by nature, constantly tweaking his creations much to the delight of the Vokey followers. He listens to tour PGA players for their insight. And in many cases, institutes their ideas to the overall wedge design.
There are currently two Vokey models available, the Design Spin Milled and the 200 Series. Let's the compare the two Vokey models to bring clarity as to their differences:
Vokey Design Spin Milled Features
- 30% greater groove volume resulting in more spin rate.
- Steeper draft angles resulting in additional friction for unparalleled shot-stopping ability.
- Roughened texture for additional gripping.
- Wide variety of sole and bounce configurations.
- Two finish options, chrome and oil can.
Vokey 200 Series Features
- Classic Teardrop profile.
- High toe and shallow heel.
- Standard U Grooves resulting in less spin.
- Wide variety of sole and bounce configurations.
- Two finish options, chrome and oil can.
The Vokey 200 Series is considered the more classic wedge configuration . The Vokey Design Spin Milled offers more spin and shot stopping capabilities. Thus making the Vokey Spin Milled the preference for somebody looking for more shot making assistance.
Titleist and Cleveland have gone head to head for a many years and seem to be destined to continue their rivalry for the immediate future. The advent of the popular CG12 wedge will probably allow Cleveland to hold its edge on Titleist as the wedge market leader, only time will tell though. Titleist seems to be content to pounce on market changes when they arise. One such example is when Titleist recognized early market trends toward the 60 degree and gap wedges -- and they capitalized on both counts, offering more wedge configurations. The competition soon followed suit.
Vokey wedges are probably favored by the more skilled player. It has been reported 70% of Vokey sales come from single-digit handicappers. This in itself lends itself to a much smaller market audience.
The Vokey wedge certainly has become a common sight in golf bags around the world. The Vokey is the weapon of choice for the player that recognizes that the short game as the great equalizer. You owe it to yourself to try out the great Vokey wedge to see if it will become your weapon of choice.
