Driving the golf ball a long way is more down to technique than power aE" if you look at the professional golfers, they all have the ability to crush three hundred drives, however they seem to swing effortlessly most of the time. This is because they use efficient weight transfer and have excellent timing to make sure that they hit the ball in the same way each and every time. There are actually five main principles to hitting the golf ball a long way, and in this article I'm going to discuss one of the key factors that you should be aware of in your quest to hit the ball three hundred yards and beyond. This principle alone can add anywhere from 10 to 30 yards to your drive and is probably one of the most important things that you should learn as a professional golfer. If you can practice this technique and integrate it into your natural swing then you'll be able to start hitting further drives without putting your back out trying to smack the heck out of the golf ball. Here's what you must do: The power in your swing always comes from the rotation in the shoulders and core of your body aE" you'll never be able to generate any decent power from just swinging your arms by themselves. Therefore to get more distance we want to try and maximise the rotational power that we can get from our body.

But simply extending our shoulder turn could lead to more eratic and less consistent drives. What you can do, however, is encourage your body to turn further by following a swing thought. That swing thought is to take the club back away from the ball with as much extension as possible. You should be trying to get a wide arc on take away. This servers two purposes aE" firstly, it encourages your left shoulder to turn early on in the backswing and tuck under your chin, secondly it makes sure that your swing plane is not too steep. All too often I'll see people picking the club up on the backswing and creating a really steep angle of attack to impact aE" this will sap the power from your swing and is not the correct way to use the driver. Here's a drill you can use to encourage a wide take away. Put a tee into the ground behind the ball on the correct swing path aE" make sure there is sufficient distance between the tee and the ball. As you bring the club back, try to hit the tee out of the ground. On the downswing, hit the ball as per usual. If you can do this with a bucket of balls down the range for a few days, the feeling will start to be ingrained in what's called your muscle memory. Experts say that you need to do a movement somewhere in the region of 100 times before it is committed to your muscle memory. After this point, the swing will become more and more natural for you and you'll create a wide arc without even thinking about it! See you 300 yards down the fairway!

It's not your strength that's holding you back form hitting 300 yard drives - it's simply down to technique! Discover secret golf driving tips with Eric Jones, World Long Drive champion of 2003.

The longest hitting cloud in your bag will usually be your driver, and it is also often the most expensive club as well. Although it's only one club out of several in your bag, it gets a lot of unnecessary extra attention. Most often its used in long-distance situations such a you might encounter on a par 4 or par 5 hole.

For many golfers, the driver can be one of the most difficult clubs to master. It requires not only power, but also a good deal of control to be able to use it successfully. On long holes it can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on how well you control your tee shot. And of course, choosing the right driver for your needs and skill level will go a long way toward helping you have the control you need. So what should you look for when you're ready to buy a driver?

The answer to that question will usually depend to a great degree on your own skill level at the game. A driver that works extremely well for a beginner will not do the job at all for a more advanced golfer.

But probably the first place to start is with the driver head. For high handicap players, it's a good idea to have as much sweet spot on the club face as possible. To achieve this, many driver head manufacturers are turning to lighter head materials, such as titanium. Because titanium is so light, the clubhead can be much larger and still have the same weight. That in turn means that the sweet spot will also be larger, enabling beginning players and high handicap golfers to better control their drives. Steel is also used for driver heads, but requires much more control than a titanium head. However, one big advantage of a steel head is that it is usually much less expensive.

The next thing to consider is what kind of loft your driver head should have. Generally speaking, newer and less experienced golfers should try to play a driver that has more than 10° of loft, while those that are more experienced and low handicap players can do well with a driver loft that is under 10°.

The driver shaft is an important component of the club, and much of your choice will depend on what kind of swing you have. Usually most beginners do not have a powerful swing, and therefore could benefit from a more flexible shaft. On the other hand golfers that have swings in the 100+ mph area will probably need to purchase a more stiff shaft to give them better control.

There's a lot of discussion today about what kind of material is used for the golf driver shafts, but generally it boils down to either steel or graphite in most cases. Actually, graphite shafts will usually cost quite a bit more than comparable steel shafts, and for most average golfers steel shafts will do just fine. But if you happen to have an exceptionally slow swing speed perhaps a graphite shaft will help you gain a little more distance.

As you can see, there are several components that go into creating a golf driver, and understanding how those various components work together and the functions they serve can help you select a golf driver that will fit your skill level and the way that you play.

Golf head covers are meant to protect a golfer's golf clubs while they are not in use. They protect the clubs from the weather and from each other as they may hit against each other and other objects while in the bag. These head covers can also make a statement about the golfer as well since there are such a variety of head covers available. There are the traditional ones that are made with fur, leather, or even knitted golf head covers. Then there are those that are a little more unique.

Some golfers, especially those that have spent a lot of money on their golf clubs prefer to have custom golf head covers made for their set of clubs. This is to ensure that the covers will fit just right to the particular club, giving the golf club the added protection.

Also there are golf head covers to protect different clubs, there are covers made for wood golf clubs, driver golf clubs, putters, and iron head golf clubs, it is a good idea to try to buy a head cover made for each of these different types since each type of club is a different size and shape.

Everyone that has ever bought a gift for someone knows that there are certain people who are more difficult to shop for then others. For these types of people, golf head covers are a great idea for a gift. Many people enjoy giving and receiving personalized golf head covers. Many places can do this personalization and it is sure to be a memorable gift as the golfer sees the head covers each time he or she plays golf. These personalized head covers are obviously a great way of knowing for certain which clubs belong to which golfer, if the question ever came up.

Along with personalized golf head covers, novelty covers would also make an excellent gift. Even if the golfer already has a set of covers, he or she will certainly appreciate a different style of cover.

Along with these, traditional types of golf head covers, there are also types of covers that truly show off the unique personality of a golfer. If the golfer likes a certain type of animal for instance, there is sure to be a cover depicting that animal.

Dogs seem to be a popular type of animal to display on golf club head covers, dogs such as Dalmatians, beagles and bulldogs, along with a host of other dogs. For people who enjoy sea life, dolphin head covers are available and for those that enjoy birds there are a wide variety of bird golf head covers available as well, anything from a duck to an eagle can be found.

Besides these animals, there are many other types of animal golf head covers available to choose from, for anyone who likes any type of animal, there is certain to be a head cover for that person.

Some people have a great personality and should show it off. This can be done by having a funny golf head cover. These will not only protect the golf clubs but will certainly bring a smile to the golfers face, and probably the faces of other golfers around them.

Most avid golfers value their clubs and want to keep them in the best condition possible. They generally do this in a number of ways, including using golf club head covers, and while it is true that these covers are important, it is clear that golf head covers are definitely more then simply a functional piece of golf equipment; they are a fun way to make a statement about the golfer himself.

Callaway Steelhead
Where to sell broken driver head/shaft?

This past weekend, I was at the driving range with my cousin and we were sharing my golf set. He set up to use my Callaway driver and on the down swing, he hit the golf ball with the graphite shaft. The driver came off at the point about maybe 1/2 an inch above the driver, where the shaft is connected to the driver.

The driver is fairly old (Callaway Steelhead III w/ Graphite Shaft) and the cost to reshaft it at the local golf stores(Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, etc) is apprx $150USD. For that price I could just spend a few more bucks and buy me a new driver. I was told by some people at the driving range that I could sell the shaft and driver head to random places.

Any idea where? Or should I just toss it out?

$150 Someones taking you for a ride my friend. Shaft woould cost $20 to $60 .Less if you look on ebay. Reshaft procedure maybe $10. See a local independat club builder and you will be happy. Not the chain store

Raw Materials
Golf clubs are manufactured from a wide variety of materials, including metals, plastics, ceramics, composites, wood, and others. Different materials are chosen for different parts of the club based on their mechanical properties, such as strength, elasticity, formability, impact resistance, friction, damping, density, and others.

Club heads for drivers and other woods may be made from stainless steel, titanium, or graphite fiber-reinforced epoxy. Face inserts may be made from zirconia ceramic or a titanium metal matrix ceramic composite. Oversize metal woods are usually filled with synthetic polymer foam. Traditionalists can even buy woods that are made of real wood. Persimmon, laminated maple, and a host of exotic woods are used. Wood club heads are usually soaked in preserving oil or coated with a synthetic finish like polyurethane to protect them from moisture.

Club heads for irons and wedges may be made from chrome-plated steel, stainless steel, titanium, tungsten, beryllium nickel, beryllium copper, or combinations of these metals. Heads for putters may be made of all of the same materials as irons, plus softer materials like aluminum or bronze, because the velocity of impact is much slower when putting.

Club shafts may be made from chrome-plated steel, stainless steel, aluminum, carbon or graphite fiber-reinforced epoxy, boron fiber-reinforced epoxy, or titanium. Grips are usually made from molded synthetic rubber or wrapped leather.

Design
The rules of the United States Golf Association (USGA) have only a few brief paragraphs regarding the design of golf clubs. There are no restrictions on weight or materials, and only a few restrictions on dimensions. Shafts must be at least 18 in (457 mm) long. The distance from the heel to the toe of the head must be greater than the distance from the face to the back of the head. The cross-sectional dimension of the grip must not be greater than 1.75 in (45 mm) in any direction. Of all the rules, however, the most important one requires that the club ''shall not be substantially different from the traditional and customary form and make."

It is this last rule that sometimes gives club designers the fits. It means, for example, that club heads may not have features like aiming fins or holes to reduce aerodynamic drag. Shafts may not have flexible joints, and so forth. In short, anything that is not "traditional and customary" is not allowed. All new club designs must be submitted to the USGA for review and approval before they may be used in tournament play.

Within the USGA guidelines, many new features have been incorporated into golf clubs. Using computer-aided design programs and mathematical models of club and ball dynamics, designers have learned to utilize new materials, redistribute weight, and alter the general shape of the club in an attempt to help both professional golfers and weekend duffers improve their games.

One common feature of modern irons is perimeter weighting, which places most of the club head weight around the edges, leaving the center with less material. This added mass reduces the amount of club twist when the ball is struck towards the edge of the club, rather than in the center. The effect is to increase the size of the effective hitting area, or the "sweet spot" as golfers call it. The hollow oversize metal heads on some drivers have the same effect.

Another design feature of some modern clubs is the offset head, where the striking face is located to the rear of the centerline of the shaft. This places the golfer's hands slightly ahead of the ball at impact, which tends to square the club face and give better direction control.

Other design features help golfers make cleaner shots from uneven terrain, get the ball up in the air from grassy lies, and correct their tendency to hit to one side or the other. As with any product, some features offer more psychological help than physical help. Despite three decades of golf club design improvements, the driving distance of the best professional golfers increased only 12 yd (11 m) between 1968 and 1995, and the average winning score fell at a rate of only one stroke every 21 years.

The Manufacturing
Process
Every golf club maker uses a slightly different manufacturing process. The largest companies use highly automated machinery, while the smallest companies use hand tools. Some parts of the manufacturing process may be unique to one company and regarded as trade secrets.

Here is a typical sequence of operations used to produce a machine-made, perimeter-weighted golf iron.

Forming the head

1. The head is formed by a process called investment casting. A master die of the club head is made from metal. The die consists of two halves with a hollow cavity that is the exact shape and size of the desired club head. Molten wax is poured into the die cavity and allowed to harden.

2. When the wax is hard, the die is opened, and the wax pattern is removed. This process is repeated several times. Several wax patterns are attached to a central wax column, called a sprue, to form a tree.

3. The tree is dipped into a liquid mixture of powdered ceramic material, various chemicals, and a gelling agent. It is set aside until the coating dries. The tree is then placed in a container, and the container is filled with a liquid molding slurry, which is allowed to harden.

4. The hardened mold is heated to about 1,000-2,000° F (550-1,100° C) in an oven to melt the wax patterns. The melted wax runs out the bottom and any wax residue is vaporized. The mold is then inverted.

5. Molten metal for the club head is poured into the hot mold and allowed to harden. When the metal has cooled, the mold material is broken away from the tree, and the individual cast heads are cut off the sprue. The investment casting process produces parts with an excellent surface finish and no flash or parting lines to remove. The parts can be made from a wide range of metals and their weight is uniform from one part to another.

6. Most iron heads are heated treated to harden the outer surface. The head is heated either with a flame or an induction coil, and then quickly cooled. This causes the steel near the surface to form a different grain structure that is much harder than the rest of the head.

Forming the shaft
7 If the shaft is made of steel or stainless steel, it is formed by a process called tube drawing. A tube of the desired length is pulled part way through an opening in a die slightly smaller than the tube diameter, which causes the drawn portion of the tube to neck down in diameter. This process is repeated several times. Each time the die diameter is made slightly smaller, and the length of tube pulled through the die is several inches less. The result is a tube that decreases in diameter from about 0.50 in (13 mm) to about 0.37 in (9.5 mm) in seven or eight small steps spaced along the length of the shaft. If the shaft is made of steel, it is chrome plated after it is formed.
8 If the shaft is made of graphite fiber-reinforced composite material, it is formed by a process called pultrusion. A bundle of graphite fibers is pulled through a circular opening in one or more heated dies while epoxy resin is forced through the opening at the same time. The graphite fibers become imbedded in the epoxy and the heat makes the epoxy harden to form the shaft. The shaft is then cooled by air or water and cut to length. Graphite fiber-reinforced shafts are the same diameter along the entire length.

Assembling the club
9 There are several ways to fasten the head to the shaft. With some metal shafts, the shaft is inserted into the socket on the head and a small hole is drill crossways through both the socket and the shaft. A small metal pin is then pressed into the hole and held in place with an epoxy adhesive. With graphite shafts, the head is bonded to the shaft with an adhesive. This second process is becoming more common for all shaft materials, including metal shafts.
10 The other end of the shaft is placed in a hollow die and a rubber grip is molded around its upper portion. The shaft may then be labeled with an adhesive sticker to show the manufacturer, brand name, degree of flex, or other information.
11 The raised metal parts are polished to give the club a finished appearance. As a final step, any recessed lettering or logos on the club head may be filled with paint or another color finish. Adhesive stickers or adhesive-backed metal plates may be affixed to the club head for identification or decoration as well.
Quality Control
Golf clubs are treated with almost as much attention to specifications as components for aircraft. In fact most golf club manufacturers emphasize their specifications as a means of differentiating their clubs from the competition. Swing weight, lie angle, shaft torque, and a host of other specifications are not only important to the club designers, but are also important to the company's customers. In addition to dimensional checks and process controls, clubs are randomly tested for a variety of specifications that affect performance.

The Future
The popularity of golf is expected to continue to grow. As the number of recreational players increases, there will be an emphasis on designing clubs that make the game more enjoyable for the average golfer. Despite objections from purists, oversize club heads and other game-improving features will continue to be offered.

I don't know about you but I always love stepping up to the golf ball and slamming it 300 yards down the fairway, Fellow golfers always seem to think it's amazing because I'm only five foot 9 and have a very slight build to me. Actually, it's not amazing at all, it's not strength that makes you hit the ball so far - it's technique. If you can master the technique and make it so your timing is absolutely spot on then you'll pretty much be able to hit 300 yard drives every time you step up to the ball. In an interview with the ex world long driving champion the emphasis was not about going down the gym and adding weight to your bench press, but making sure that you connect with the ball at exactly the right time for maximum leverage and follow through. Now, let's not get carried away though, club head speed undoubtedly plays a role in producing mammoth drives, but I'd take great technique over great club head speed any day of the week. Let's face it, a 300 yard drive is no good if it ends up in the river! Here is one tip that I've been taught time and time again for hitting huge drives with relative ease. Weight Transfer. If you can get your weight transfer sorted so that you move onto the back foot when the club is on its way back and swing through to the front foot when the club follows through then you'll always be able to hit the ball a long way. The power of the weight transfer is evident in any sport that involves hitting something a long way. For instance take a look at the baseball players; if you see a swing sequence you'll notice that they start with their weight on the back foot and propell it onto their front foot as they go for the swing. Even just throwing a ball the weight transfer is key.

You can practice your weight transfer by putting two clubs on the ground outside either of your feet and do some practice swings. Make sure that at the top of the backswing your weight is over the club on the back foot and then as you follow through you end up over the club at the front. It will feel funny at first because it will be exaggerated, but after a while you'll get used to it and it's a great drill that will help you to take the weight transfer onto the golf course with you and pummel the ball 300 yards! If you over exaggerate the movement you may feel your body coming through before your arms which usually results in a slice. This just means you have a bit of synchronisation to do before it all clicks into place - it doesn't take long, you just need a bucket of balls down the range. Here's another tip you can use: On the downswing, concentrate on really snapping your hands through the ball so that you get the explosive power of the wrists. You can practice this with a higher club before you jump straight onto the driver. This added an extra 10-15 yards to my drive pretty much straight away - I had a tendency of gripping the club to tightly and not releasing properly. That's all for now folks, happy driving!
