Why use fairway woods?

If hybrids/fairway utilities go just as far as fairway woods, and are easier to hit than fairway woods, why use fairway woods?

As far back as I can remember playing Golf I always worried when I had to pull a Fairway Wood from my Golf Bag. Since then they have introduced Hybrid Irons Golf Clubs. And I still worried when I had to play a Hybrid. For some reason myself, like so many others, have found that pulling Fairway Woods or Hybrid Irons from the Golf Bag just causes instant negativity.

Then one day I was working on my Golf Game at the local driving range when I noticed a young man two tees down practicing with his Fairway Woods and Hybrid Irons. I paused for few minutes to see what kind of results he was getting with these Clubs. I was astonished to see the ease at which he was hitting various Hybrid Irons. After a few minutes I had to approach this young man and inquire about the Golf Clubs he had been using.

He was more than delighted to stop and speak with me about his New Golf Clubs. I asked "you mean these clubs are new and you haven't played them yet?" "That's right!" he boasted. He started to tell me about how he always had trouble hitting Fairway Woods and Hybrid Irons off the turf. And I concurred. He stated that he had seen an ad featuring New Acer Hybrid Irons. The Clubs looked like great Golf Clubs and the price was certainly affordable. So he said he ordered them. "They just arrived today!", he said. I ordered them three days ago!

He was so confident when he was talking about his New Golf Hybrids and based on his results I could understand why. He was kind enough to let me try one of his New Hybrids. I don't know what it is about theses Clubs but I was almost instantly hitting shots like a pro! I shared with him how I always feared standing over a Golf Shot with a Wood in my hands. It had gotten into my head that I was just going to hit a bad shot. But I had to keep trying. But these Acer Hybrids were doing all the work for me.

I simply swing like I always do and the Ball just seems to explode off the Club Face. And it goes straight too!

Needless to say I now own a Set of Acer Hybrids too. My short and middle Irons shots have improved my game so much that I can now afford to miss a putt or two, haha! That's another story.

I started golfing a little under 2 years ago. At first, I had a beginners set of woods and irons. After about 6 months, I started upgrading the woods 1 at a time. I bought the Cobra LDM series except my 9 wood and it is a Lynx. I would suggest that you go to a golf store and hit a store brand or ask if they have used set if you don't want to spend a lot of money right off. Get the woods that you hit best. Try before you buy regardless of brand.

The best time to play the Stinger shot is when you are faced with a very narrow tee shot and there is a lot of trouble bordering the fairway. The last thing you want is for your ball to miss the fairway and land up in one of the multiple hazards.

So what should you do? The first thing is too not hit your driver as it is definitely not worth the risk. This type of shot requires a three wood or even a two iron for you to execute it successfully. Once you have selected the appropriate club follow these steps.

Step 1: Tee the ball very low to the ground.

Step 2: Ensure that you grip the club firmly with your left hand. This is extremely important as your left hand is the most responsible for controlling the movement of the clubhead.

Step 3: Bring your right hand on to the grip, but make sure you grip the club lightly with this hand as it will allow you to increase your hand-arm speed and will also add significant power to your shot. Which you will definitely need to compensate for the distance you will be losing for not using the driver.

Step 4: Position your hands ahead of the ball so that the clubface is still pointing at the target, but is slightly closed.

Step 5: Start your backswing, keeping it as flat as possible until you get to the parallel position. At this point your right hand should be hinged slightly.

Step 6: Start your downswing, but keep your right hand hinged and then unhinge your wrist at impact. You should also ensure that the back of your left hand is turned downward to keep the clubface closed at impact.

This should help you to significantly reduce the loft of the club and will help you hit a long, low flying shot that will split the fairway and consequently have a lot of roll. Make sure you practice this shot on the driving range first as it is a bit unorthodox and will take some getting used to. I hope this helps.

Fairway woods are dominated by Taylormade as well. Titleis is up there, but not on top. Taylormade has the most irons on tour as well. The r7 line is used by over 200 pga players and 100 nationwiders. The TM RAC MB's are used by Sergio.

One thing we all need to consider when hitting iron shots is ball position.

When hitting your longer irons the ball needs to be a little bit further forward in your stance than when you are hitting your shorter irons. That's because of the way the golf swing works and the width of the golf swing.

As an easy reference, between your three, four and five iron and your nine and wedge, there should be about two inches difference in where the ball is positioned in relation to your feet.

Keep in mind, of course, that when you're using a mid to short iron you're not after distance alone, not like when hitting a driver, fairway wood or even a long iron.

Remember that you really only want to swing the golf club at around about 75%-80% of your full power so that you've got full control and full balance,. It's very important that accuracy is the main thing for these irons, because we're now not hitting a 30-40 yard wide fairway with our irons, we're actually going to strike the ball onto the green now.

The closer to the green you get, the more you should be aiming for the hole itself. Remember with iron shots, wedge shots and with pitching, if you aim for the hole itself and don't just aim to hit it on the green, then even if you don't quite hit it as well as you would like, at least then you're just going to miss the flag and skirt the green.

If you basically lose your concentration and just aim to hit the green rather than aiming to get the ball close, you'll find you'll miss more greens. So keep your concentration and aim for as small a target as possible.

One great tip is to take one club more than you would normally hit, and grip down the shaft. This will lead to you hitting an easy shot, rather than trying to hit 100% power.

Remember, at the end of the day, it is how many shots that get counted, not how you hit them.

Depending on your swing speed a regular flex shafted 3 wood or 5 wood if you haven't played golf . The clubs are lofted, easier to get the ball air borne and give one a sense of accomplishment when a ball is in flight.. Drivers with 12.5 degree loft would probably be the next purchase. The club should result in longer golf shots than those hit with either the 3 or 5 woods.

One of the ways to drastically lower your score is to improve your golf course management. This basically means improving the way you approach and play each hole on the course.

So lets get started.

Do you get on to the tee box of a par four or a par five and automatically reach for your driver? Do you look at the layout of a particular whole and decide which club will be best suited to the teeshot? Do you ever look at the obstacles ahead of you when teeing off or playing your approach shot towards a green and decide on the best position to be in for the following shot? When
hitting approach shots to the green, do you always go for the pin?

If your answer is no to all of these questions then you struggle with golf course management.

There are two very important things to think about when playing your shot.

1) If I hit the ball to a certain position on a hole, what will my next shot be like and what is the chance that I will be playing the next shot from the fairway or the green?

2) Where is the best position for my ball to be in for the next shot?

That is basically what it all comes down to.
From were will I be hitting my next shot?

Don't get me wrong, I like hitting my driver as much as the next guy. The problem just comes in when I don't hit my drive straight or the landing area of the drive is riddled with hazards. My next shot will then most probably be a recovery shot from the hazard, which basically is a waste of a shot and after playing one recovery shot on every hole I end up playing 18 more shots than I should have.

So here is how to improve your course management and to get rid of those extra wasted shots.

1) Before hitting the ball analyse the hole ahead and identify all possible hazards.
2) Select an area on the fairway to hit to that hasn't got too many hazards and a relatively large room for error.
3) Select a club that you feel comfortable with hitting to that area.
4) Hit the ball and look forward to a hazard free next shot.

All this method will help you do is select the right club for the shot and leave you in the best possible position to play the following shot. Sure, you might have to hit a 3 wood instead of a driver or aim towards the wider part of the green, but I'd rather sacrifice a bit of distance or accuracy than playing my next shot from a hazard that will cost me an extra shot on that hole.
